Causes and Effects
Caffeine is a chemical that can stimulate
the central nervous system. Coffee, tea and chocolate naturally contain
caffeine. Caffeine is also included in sodas, energy drinks, diet drugs, even
gums. May people often consume caffeine to increase energy, concentration, and
reduce fatigue and drowsiness. Moreover, caffeine is also addictive, so for
some people coffee is a daily consumption that can't be missed. Even though it
is safe and good for the body, caffeine also has some negative effects on the
body, especially if it's consumed excessively. Three negative effects of caffeine
on your body are anxiety disorder, indigestion, and headache.
One of the
negative effects of caffeine is make people anxious. According
to research by the University of Michigan, caffeine can cause symptoms of
excessive anxiety and nervousness. Caffeine stimulates stress hormones and adrenaline in our bodies.
Caffeine works by stimulating the central nervous system in the brain. Then the
brain releases dopamine and serotonin, as well as the hormones adrenaline and
norepinephrine. These hormones can then cause you to experience anxiety. Caffeine
also eliminates minerals that fight anxiety such as magnesium. That way, it’s
not only triggers anxiety but also keeps it high. Caffeine can really worsen
the effects of anxiety, whether it eliminates the time and quality of sleep and
will cause stress for those of you who drink too much coffee.
Another negative effect
of consuming caffeine is it causes indigestion or digestive disorders. Caffeine
triggers the stomach to produce excessive acid, especially if consumed too often on an empty stomach.
Gastric acid is corrosive and can damage the stomach if it is left without any
content. Such conditions can cause diarrhea,
stomach ulcers or chronic stomach pain. Especially for those who have ulcer disease, where
caffeine can trigger the recurrence of the pain. You may try limiting your
consumption of caffeine if you suffer from indigestion.
The third negative
effect of caffeine is headache. This is because you unconsciously experience
caffeine dependence when you consume it frequently. When you suddenly stop
consuming it, your body will experience sudden changes. This can trigger the
appearance of headaches. This condition
is caused by a narrowing of the arteries surrounding the brain by caffeine.
Now, when caffeine is not available, the blood vessels will enlarge. Finally, a
headache appears. Therefore, you should pay attention to caffeine intake per
day. If you plan to reduce caffeine, you should do it slowly. Start reducing
caffeine gradually over time, not suddenly because that will trigger a
headache.
Aside from being
able to provide many benefits, it turns out that there are quite a lot of side
effects that can be caused from caffeine. In order for the benefits of caffeine
to be optimal and not harmful to the body, experts recommend consuming caffeine
to a certain extent per day. It's recommended to consume 200-300 mg per day,
equivalent to two to four cups of coffee.
